SPANZ

SPANZ (South Pacific Airlines of New Zealand) made a big splash in New Zealand’s highly regulated aviation environment of the 1960s. , this story describes how SPANZ served 21 NZ towns and cities in a nationwide network, with a quarter of a million Kiwis experiencing the ‘Delicate-art-of-Spanzmanship’ with its innovative airline marketing such as NZ’s first in-flight meals on regional routes.

Illustrated by many rare photographs, this book tells how the airline boldly challenged the air licensing bureaucracy, political establishment and the government-owned NAC monopoly of the day. Specially-modified DC-3 Viewmasters, with the largest windows ever seen on a NZ airliner, pioneered group tourist flying and new airline services to provincial areas like Central Otago, Lake Taupo and the Wairarapa.
