On leaving the Southland Times I went on to a Graphic Design role with McDowell Print. Here I spent a further 3+ years developing my skills and also helped out behind the scenes in the technical / production side of the business. Favourite things to Design:
I like to design logos and coming up with branding ideas. I find that the most enjoyable part is the concept. Simple logo elements combined with harmonious typefaces as well as a straight-to-the-point tagline are key to a great brand.
Proudest Achievements:
It’s hard to single out any one design or moment as I get a great deal of pleasure out of my creative work. I would have to say the people I have met so far in this industry (and I have had the pleasure of working with some of Southland’s top designers and typesetters as well as some fantastic account managers and printers); all of these people work together to help bring my creations to life.
Design Background:
Starting as an apprentice/Pre-Press Operator in 2005 at Craigs Design & Print, I accrued knowledge and design skills through Senior Graphic Designers who had been in the printing industry for numerous years. While there, my three-year apprenticeship gave me the credentials to back up my history and knowledge of the printing industry. After seven years I moved from this reputable print house to a familiar signwriter. I then had another couple of years working in the printing industry in Invercargill before coming back to where it all started for me at Craigs.
