To make such an impression on a small town, and to leave such a legacy of goodwill, a man must be of exceptional character. Doctor Eric Elder served the Tuatapere community for almost 50 years as a GP, beloved by all and with a finger in every pie. In 2021 I was asked to compile this book and in doing so I have come to know and admire a man I never met. Through the many accounts of his words and actions I came to see him as others saw him and to understand the very profound impact he had on his community – all those babies, a million stitches and a hundred tales that tell of his humour, kindness, wisdom and dedication.
